Who We Are
The New Hampshire Division of Children, Youth and Families ("DCYF") established a "Community Connect" program through DCYF's Nashua district office in July 2020.
We are seeking to recruit and train more adult volunteers to serve as Mentors for youth ages 14+ in the foster care system.
What We Do
Mentors help youth believe they can create a future they want. Mentors model positive relationship skills and help their mentees strengthen communication skills. A mentor is an experienced, caring and trusted adult advisor who is willing to listen to our youth and guide them through every day challenges. In so doing, mentors can help reduce the risk factors that could lead to negative outcomes such as high school drop-out or substance abuse, thus strengthening our communities.
We want our youth in foster care to build meaningful adult connections and confidence in trusting others. So we ask mentors for a year-long commitment of 4 hours per month.
A mentor is:
A friend, a relationship builder, a supporter, a career guide, a role model, a listener, a tutor, a confidence builder, a motivator, a coach.
A mentor is not:
A parent, a judge, a preacher, a therapist, a social worker, a disciplinarian, a gift giver, an ATM.
