Needs From: Volunteer Greater Nashua

Grow Nashua provides community gardens throughout the city for low income families to grow fresh produce and connect with their neighbors.  We currently support 7 different garden sites and 160+ plots.

To keep the gardens welcoming and fun to be at we do our best to keep them looking good.  Occasionally someone will leave a piece of trash too large for us to dispose of in a city trash bin (like a tire or large board) and we need to bring the item to the dump.

 

Responsibilities: 

Visiting a garden and picking up a piece of trash.

Disposing at the landfill.

 

Benefit:

Having a garden that is tidy creates a welcoming, relaxing, beautiful place to spend time, which translates to positive mental health.

 

Skills & Supplies needed: 

Driving to the community garden.

Having a vehicle with a dump sticker.

Working independently.

 

Duration: 

Usually less than an hour round trip to the landfill.

 

Time Frame:

We'll let you know when there is something to pickup.

You can go whenever you like any day of the week at any hour to take care of the trash.

To keep the gardens welcoming and fun to be at we do our best to keep them looking good.  We would love your help with weed-wacking periodically when the weeds start to take off!!

 

Responsibilities: 

Visiting a garden and weed whacking around the garden beds, fences, and other miscellaneous areas.

 

Benefit:

Beyond the nourishing veggies, having a garden that is a nice relaxing and beautiful place to visit is good for mental health.

 

Skills & Supplies needed: 

Driving to the community garden.

Having a working weed whacker and the ability to use it.

Working independently.

 

Duration: 

Usually less than an hour per garden.

 

Time Frame:

We have 7 gardens in the city, so you are welcome to choose one or several.

You can go whenever you like any day of the week at any hour.

You can do it independently or we could just send you a text when it is needed.  

We'll customize to your desire.

We prioritize supporting low income families, so try to provide as many helpful resources as possible.

One of these is providing free seeds and seedlings to the gardening families.

 

Responsibilities: 

Sorting and organizing seeds.

Bagging them up in ziplocks based on the time of the season that they will be used.  

Driving the seedlings to the 7 sites throughout the city and placing them inside our Garden Huts.

 

Benefit:

Your help will allow families to grow food that they can use to feed their families.  You'll also be setting them up for success, as the seeds and seedlings we place are coordinate with the right time of the spring/summer/fall to be most successful.

 

Skills: 

Reading seed packaging.

Working with your hands.

Driving independently. 

 

Duration: 

Usually 1-2 hrs each time a need arises.

 

Time Frame:

This volunteer role happens on weekdays whenever is convenient for you between 9-5.

Grow Nashua has built and manages 7 community gardens for families to grow fresh produce and connect with their neighbors.  We support about 160 garden plots spread over all these sites.

Often times things break at the site or we need to replace hoses, patch fencing, or replace a board on a raised bed.

If you are handy with fixing miscellaneous things, we'd love a hand on occasion.

Responsibilities: 

Working with wood.

Working with garden irrigation things like hoses, spigots, and sprayers.

Benefit:

Your help will create a welcoming environment for the families that garden with us and rely on the space for access to nutritious fresh fruits and veggies.

Skills: 

Working with miscellaneous hand tools.

Working independently and figuring out solutions that will solve an issue.

Duration: 

Usually 1-2 hrs each time a need arises.

Time Frame:

Most of the needs/issues that arise throughout the gardening season you will be able to do at your leisure.  On occasion something will be time sensitive, but the majority of the time you can go any day any time.

Our Lil' Free Farmstand is all about community helping community.
