On August 24th and 25th, United Way of Greater Nashua volunteers will be working in collaboration with Grow Nashua to create a Community Garden between Ledge Street School and Davidson Landing in Nashua. Community Gardens can be found in several locations around Nashua and are intended to make growing fresh food easier for neighborhood people living in apartments. We'd love for you to join us to do a little digging, planting, and building! We'll be working in several small 12 person shifts throughout the day so we can maintain plenty of social distancing.
Activities:
- Cutting and assembling wooden raised beds
- Mixing soil for use in shallow wheelchair accessible beds
- Filling raised beds with soil
- Prepping ADA compliant pathways
- Gravel smoothing of pathways
- Cutting ropes for wicking irrigation system
- Installing buckets for wicking irrigation
- Making lids for buckets
- Building compost station
- Building a small water spigot cover
- Running plumbing to site
Mission
The new site will be the first fully accessible garden site in Nashua. It will serve Davidson landing, which is a low income senior housing unit where the seniors are already very excited about the prospect of growing their own veggies and socializing in the growing space. The second target audience for this new space is Ledge St. Elementary and their parents. This school is a Title I school where 80% of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch. This food education is critical to reach the youth at this time and empowers students to make positive lifestyle choices through hands-on learning experiences, community involvement, and healthy eating awareness campaigns. This new site will also expand Grow Nashua’s geographical footprint, as our intent is to provide the neighborhood families with a garden as close to their residence as possible.
